For example, you may be exceptionally good at certain software applications. You can sit at your computer and compute away for hours, performing amazing feats with the software, but the minute someone asks you to show them how to do what you were doing, you freeze up. You become tongue-tied; you feel like your hands on the keyboard are suddenly all thumbs. Has this ever happened to you?
If it has, one way to get over this lack of confidence is through story telling. In my book, Your Unique Style of Fit, I have outlined two exercises you can complete to help you build your confidence via creative story telling. In Exercise 1, In order to create new habits, you must tell your story. Think of yourself as the writer and director of your life. Writing about your joy, pain, strengths and weaknesses will allow your brains to release informational data tucked inside your subconscious mind. Our brains absorb the data connected to the feelings we experience while listening to that story. When the information is recalled, so is the feeling of the telling. Stories connect facts and feelings to make information resonant, memorable, and actionable In Exercise 2, You will write a vivid story about who you are. Include aspects of your strengths, weaknesses, pain, happiness. After writing your story read it out loud as if you were an actor auditioning for a movie role. To activate different parts of your brain, include emotions, various voice intonation and sensory experiences. For more information, refer to pages 37 & 38 in the book. The point here is, though, that you can make changes in your life to enhance your confidence. Not all of us are born with the innate ability to stand up in front of a group of people and share our knowledge and skill with them. It takes work to build confidence, but once you have that confidence, you can do anything!
